Individual antique surgical instruments can be found in large numbers in private collections and museums around the world. However, it is very rare to come across a complete departmental grouping of surgical instruments compiled by a contemporary surgeon, with details of the contents of a major hospital’s surgical store.
Three such inventories from the Glasgow Royal Infirmary have been found, including one from the RCPSG collection and two from the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde archive.
The 1825 inventory, stored in the College archive (RCPSG 28/1) is hand written in a small notebook.
